Abstract
Building an inclusive curriculum in STEM has garnered a lot of attention lately, with a bewildering array of theoretical frameworks and approaches gaining prominence. But what does this mean for STEM practitioners in teaching and learning?
This workshop will encourage participants to engage with the issues around building an inclusive STEM curriculum. We will outline the approach taken by the STEM faculty at the Open University, which used a institutional checklist approach to improve the inclusivity of our curriculum. Using qualitative data collected through interviews and reflective journals, we will present a critical evaluation on the success of this approach. Delegates will be encouraged to reflect upon and discuss diverse approaches to embedding greater inclusivity in STEM teaching and learning, and overcoming discipline-specific barriers in a STEM context.
The workshop will begin with a general discussion of inclusivity in the STEM context, and invite delegates to share barriers and enablers they have encountered in their own institutions. We will then present the findings of our SoTL project on the OU STEM Inclusive Curriculum Project, and invite critical reflection on this approach. The final part of the workshop will collectively explore alternative methods for embedding greater inclusivity in STEM in different institutional contexts.
