Abstract

In 1988, women constituted 46 per cent of the OU UK undergraduate student body and 49 per cent of new graduates. Although this suggests that they participate as students in the University almost equally with men, a closer investigation reveals that their participation is uneven across the faculties. Women remain grossly under-represented in Mathematics, Science and Technology, fields from which they have traditionally been absent. This is not surprising, but it is disappointing.

Plain Language Summary

This paper is a short review of the number of women students registered on Open University modules in 1988 across the six different subject areas. The paper also reports on the activities of the Women into Science & Engineering group, known as WISE.
