Edwards, Chris (2023). The opportunities for Generative AI to support curriculum development. PVC-RI Challenge Response; In Quality Enhancement and Innovation The Institue of Educational Technology / The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.
Abstract
The University is exploring the affordances of using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) within curriculum development. To be successful, it is important to understand curriculum development in terms of governance, management, and process. Within both the OU context and a framework of GenAI uses, this paper considers an initial list of activities and aspects of curriculum development where there is potential for GenAI to have a positive impact: either in terms of reducing effort and time or in improving the student experience and outcomes. This report, produced for PVC-RI, shows there is considerable scope for GenAI to make a significant positive contribution throughout curriculum development and leads us to recommend we continue this work, to try to realise these benefits through examples. Through a consideration of the different ways of using GenAI, we find there are also different implications for authorship. Whether the user can claim authorship broadly depends on their level of experience and expertise in being able to answer the AI prompts themselves.
Plain Language Summary
This is a report on work sponsored by the OU's Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation that considers the opportunities within curriculum development to benefit from the use of Large Language Model technology. We find there is considerable potential at almost every stage of curriculum development and consider some of the implications for staff and that this may enable improved support of the personalisation of study to benefit students.
