Abstract

There is justification for continued attempts at action-research into " organizational action". However, a complex view of verification or validation is required, incorporating simultaneously (i) the idea of ' mirror-ing ', using the criterion of usefulness to a 'client '; (ii) objective contribution to knowledge; and (iii) various aspects of the effectiveness of participative methods.

Difficulties, including that of defining the "client " interest within an organisation, are shown up with particular force in studies on decision-making and participation in workers ' co-operatives. A description is given of methods developed in past and present studies, with a preliminary evaluation suggesting how a more explicit concern with verification could be built in .
