Abstract
This chapter discusses men’s responses to the loss of a child through stillbirth or neonatal death. In doing so, it draws on sociological research where both men and women were interviewed about the loss of a child. Drawing on the concept of ‘masculinities’, it argues that there is no one way in which men respond to losing a child. The different ways in which men might respond are outlined and categorised as ‘being the guy’, protectors and providers, ‘memorialisers’ and ‘men who talk’. However, it was clear across the interviews that men would slip in and out of these categories over time.
