Mycroft, Lou; McCarthy, Luke; Astles, Paul; Matthews, Catriona and Gough, Georgina (2024). Breaking down silos and increasing awareness: Connecting ESD and Green Skills. In: EAUC annual conference 2024, 25-26 Jun 2024, University of Winchester, UK.

Abstract

Education for sustainable development (ESD) is growing as both an academic discipline and a professional practice. The green skills agenda is also developing at pace in terms of national strategy and how educators and employers are navigating this practically. ESD and green skills are not yet mainstreamed across our education provision. It’s well established that there’s a lack of awareness about green skills amongst many learners and those shaping learners’ progression choices. There is much overlap between green skills and ESD agendas – particularly with regards to the development of transferable skills and competencies. However, to date they’ve largely been tackled in different parallel spheres rather than as connected.

In this session we explore:
- where there is (and isn’t) overlap between green skills and ESD and what can the two disciplines can learn from each other
- how to reduce siloes between those working on green skills and ESD
- how we develop the competencies our learners require for sustainability in their lives and futures.

Objectives:
- Review the current ESD and green skills landscape
- Showcase innovative and impactful approaches to ESD and green skills
- Develop new collaborative strategies to enhance our ESD and green skills delivery
- Build connections between those working on ESD and green skills
