Abstract

Over the past 30 years a wide range of organisations have started involving local people in their own development, so much so that it has become a new ‘orthodoxy’ (Cornwall, 2002a). This chapter begins by looking at different definitions of participatory development and examines through what sorts of organisation it is achieved. As there are many possible approaches I have included case studies which demonstrate different facets of participation. This brings us on to a critique and an overview of where things seem to be heading, particularly linking participation to citizenship.
