Abstract

Aloidendron pillansii is one of six species of tree aloe and is an icon of the Richtersveld. Its history is outlined and it is described both in habitat and in cultivation in South Africa, the UK and New Zealand. It has long been known to be endangered and a reassessment in 2022 indicated that less than 9,000 individual plants remain in the wild, justifying its current status as a Critically Endangered species. Its relationships within the genus are discussed. The appearance of this species in a number of different art forms is also considered and illustrated.
