Abstract
This essay explores the first words in each stanza of Spenser's Faerie Queene, with a full index in an appendix of these words. It argues that these words give subtle yet pervasive semantic colouration to the poem, repeatedly inflecting the narrative in new directions. It is written as part of a festschrift for Judith H. Anderson, a leading scholar of medieval and renaissance poetry, who died in 2022.
