Abstract
Felix McGlennon (1859–1943) was a highly successful commercial songwriter and publisher whose work could be heard throughout the English-speaking world in the 1890s and 1900s. A number of his songs passed into the repertoire of traditional singers, notably ‘Grace Darling’ and ‘Goodbye Muirsheen Durkin’. McGlennon played a particularly active role in the development of legal and commercial practices that allowed successful songwriters to profit from writing popular songs. The present study endeavours to provide more detail about his professional life and practices, drawing on contemporary reports and interviews in periodicals and newspapers.
