Abstract

Harry Clifton (1832–72) and Harry Lauder (1870–1950) were key figures in the early and late music halls, respectively. Both have had a considerable impact on the repertoire of traditional singers in the English-speaking world. This chapter explores the professional careers of these two songwriters, situating them in the political economy of song production in the early and late halls.
