Abstract

'Becky and the Rockettes' is a work of short fiction disguised as a conference paper. Using Powerpoint slides and speech, it tells the story of the relationship between Hannah Hernandez-Gould - an academic - and 'Becky', a young single mother and respondent in Hannah's research project into mobile home parks. Gradually, the boundaries between academic research and personal involvement become blurred.

The paper critically engages with the idea that it is possible to separate academic work and real life, and also (more subtly) with the anxieties around fiction and nonfiction which is based on real research.

The paper was delivered at the European Network of Short Fiction Research Conference, Landscape and Temporality - Manchester, October 2023.
