Abstract
'Bright Side' is a short fiction story of 2500 words. It was shortlisted for the 2020 Manchester Fiction Prize and published online as part of the prize. It tells the story of Syb, a grieving widow who is struggling with insomnia partly caused by the streetlamp erected outside her house. Her husband, David, was a mild-mannered driving instructor with a prominent facial birthmark.
The story is part of a cycle which explores masculinity and work in contemporary Britain.
