Abstract

'A Guide to Household Infestations' is a fiction short story of 2500 words. It was shortlisted for the V S Pritchett Prize 2020, and highly commended for the Costa Short Story Award 2019. It was published in The Moth in winter 2021. It tells of Helen, who has moved from the Midlands to London, on a much-travelled route to find better work. Her flat has become infested with moths, and Helen narrates this infestation, along with the story of her father, who went missing after a work accident left him impotent.

The story is part of a cycle which explores work and masculinity in contemporary Britain. In this case, Helen is trying to negotiate her own work-based migration, as well as deal with her father's disappearance.
