Ullmann, Thomas and Durgam, Pradeep (2023). Approaches to understanding Asian, Black, and other ethnic minority students using big data. QEI Series report from IET; Quality Enhancement and Innovation, The Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.
Abstract
This report showcases big data research of The Open University over the last decades into the awarding gaps and the student experience of Asian, Black, and other ethnic minority students. The Open University is the largest in the UK and has a long research tradition in this area. This includes several recent innovative studies, the most extensive comprising 150,000 students.
The report responds to the continued need for an improved understanding of the awarding gaps and student experience of Asian, Black, and other ethnic minority students despite decades of research. The gaps are generally recognised as too high, and substantial inequalities persist throughout the student journey. Major organisations now call for stronger research approaches to understand these inequalities.
