Abstract

This phenomenological research explores two research questions; ‘To what extent does unfamiliarity with scientific language form a barrier for excluded students?’ and ‘How can 'student agency' inform a more reflexive pedagogy?’ It is an ethnographic study carried out in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and the participants are a small group of 14-year-old students. Qualitative data was collected through classroom observation, focus groups and field journal notes. The results inform a critical approach to pedagogy through increasing pupil agency and discourse. Finally, suggestions of next steps include expanding the investigation to include different age groups, subjects and educational provisions.
