Abstract
This study uses case studies from Brazil (in the Global South) and the UK (in the Global North) to present a review of the range of flood resilience options and opportunities afforded to home owners/occupants to exclude floodwater or minimise the impact of water entry. Consideration of approaches in the two case study areas identifies similarities, including permanent physical changes to the outside of the property and provision for temporary changes. However, there are also differences in approach, offering opportunities for knowledge exchange between Global North and Global South nations; for instance, UK occupants need to develop mutual support networks and low-cost resilience measures that allow rapid recovery from flooding whilst Brazilian favela occupants would benefit from investment in mapping and monitoring to provide warnings to deploy protection measures. A collaborative learning approach is proposed, exploring the “lived-experiences” of home owners/occupants in both Brazil and the UK to identify and share best practices.
