Abstract

Research has documented that athletes, sport psychology, and sports medicine professionals use psychosocial strategies, including relaxation techniques, as part of rehabilitation and return to participation following an injury. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how relaxation techniques can be used during sport injury rehabilitation. The chapter will introduce the purpose of relaxation techniques and outline the different types of relaxation techniques used in sport injury. The chapter will also summarize the existing literature on using relaxation techniques, with a goal to demonstrate the usefulness of relaxation techniques during sport injury rehabilitation.
