Abstract
As director of a large-scale, part-time distance learning Access programme for the past ten years, I have been reflecting on a career spent widening participation in higher education to mature learners from under-represented backgrounds. This discussion piece synthesises learning from scholarship undertaken over the last decade, exploring the transformational impact an Access preparatory programme can have on disadvantaged adult learners.
