Abstract

This photo-essay presents an auto-ethnography from a single parent who has moved into a diverse mixed-tenure neighbourhood, exploring what it means to belong. Drawing on a series of environmental portraits taken over two years, both closer and more distant local relationships are represented, with the images suggesting some of the tensions, challenges and exclusions that accompany the desire to belong. The photographs explore how belonging in a local place connects between and beyond, to wider geographies, and the multi-layered images suggest the simultaneity of the material, the imagined and the emotional, bringing together the now and then, the inside and outside.
