The Hueffers and the Conrads in 1899

Abstract

In this article I use an unpublished diary by Elsie Martindale, not available to scholars since the 1960s, to shed new light on the writing and domestic relationships between these two couples in 1899. Ford Madox Ford (as he became known) met Conrad in September 1898 and they were soon planning literary collaboration. Elsie described herself as a writer as well, though she was not published until much later, and the gender politics of the relationships, along with their treatment of material drawn from local Kent life are also discussed in this article.
