Abstract
In most low-income countries, men still outnumber women in accessing higher education. This inequality directly relates to the UN’s SDG5 Gender equality, SDG4 Quality education and SDG10 Reduced inequalities. Women’s participation in STEM education in Bangladesh is one of the lowest in South Asia and yet little is known about reasons for this situation. This paper reports on an ongoing project that examines access, barriers and gender equality issues in STEM education in a university in agrarian northern Bangladesh. Drawing on university STEM student survey and policy document analysis data, the paper will provide insights into access, barrier and gender equality issues in STEM education. An intersectionality approach will be adopted to examine gender equality issues and social justice revealed by data in relation to socioeconomic status, age, religion, disability, geographic location, etc. Implications for just STEM curriculum, pedagogy and student recruitment in STEM will be presented.
