Abstract
Published under the name of Art & Language, the article takes issue with prevailing accounts of the 'dematerialization' of art and of the art of Institutional Critique in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and seeks to explain the development of Art & Language's own enterprise from forms of declaration and nomination to an essayistic practice embracing disparate media and modes of production.
