A Political Earthquake: The Impact of Post-Earthquake Reconstruction on Nepali Politics

Sharrock, James (2023). A Political Earthquake: The Impact of Post-Earthquake Reconstruction on Nepali Politics. Postgraduate Research Poster Competition, The Open University.

Abstract

My research project looks at housing reconstruction after the 2015 Nepal earthquake. It asks how did the ways in which reconstruction guidelines were implemented impact Nepali politics and the distribution of power in Nepal. The study focuses on the role of intermediary brokers who connected rebuilding households to information and knowledge and also verified the progress of reconstruction according to international guidelines. This group includes engineers, NGO staff and contractors. The methods used are main qualitative and include interviews, archival and documentary research, excavation of social media posts, and ethnography. The fieldwork will take place online and in Kathmandu and a field site in Nepal. I will also draw on political settlements analysis in order to analyse changes in the distribution of power. The study has implications for international and national actors (the UN, aid donors, national governments) - in particular on the need to consider the political implications of technical reconstructions plans.
