Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to show that if in solving the problem of the paradox of the ineffable it is understanding that is at stake then we need not, as some have suggested, resort to permitting logical contradiction. Such a move assumes that understanding has to be expressed in language, for contradictions are a feature of language. Nor would it be desirable to permit logical contradiction. Far from understanding something requiring an articulation in language it is overlooked that we mundanely engage in non-linguistic understanding everyday.
