Abstract
This paper provides insight into why students are withdrawing from degree apprenticeships and proposes solutions to maximise the learning opportunity provided by such qualifications. Interviews were conducted with former apprentices to explore in-depth why they withdrew from their CMDA programme. Most of the identified issues were outside the control of the Provider, however one stood out: the perceived lack of added value of the Portfolio and its generation. The paper details how the tripartite relationship between the apprentice, employer and provider could be developed to maximise work-integrated learning, ease Portfoliomgeneration, and increase retention and overall learning from the programme.
