Abstract

In this chapter, an online guest lecturer programme is considered in terms of its role in creating and maintaining a community of inquiry (Garrison et al,. 2000; Peacock & Cowan, 2016) on a post-graduate online distance learning qualification in applied linguistics. The programme was developed on the premise that a learner’s interaction with multiple actors is considered fundamental to their success and is essential for the development of critical thinking at post-graduate level. At a micro level, the guest lectures are detailed and explored and at a macro level the chapter examines the contribution that the programme makes to the qualification as a whole and to the wider academic community within the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics at the Open University, UK. Practical considerations of the programme are also described together with their benefits and potential pitfalls. The evaluation includes feedback from tutors and students about the value of the programme. The chapter also contains recommendations for best practice in the set up and delivery of the programme, which may be of interest to colleagues in universities now seeking a blended approach to tuition.
