Abstract
Atmospheric properties of exoplanets derived from spectroscopic observations provide both an understanding of the physical and chemical processes in the atmospheres as well as constraints on their formation and evolutionary histories. Interpretations of such observations depend critically on the accuracy and reliability of atmospheric models and retrieval methods for robust atmospheric characterisation. This chapter discusses the state of the art and major questions in the modeling and retrieval of exoplanetary atmospheres, along with the challenges and opportunities on this frontier.
