Abstract

The recent turn towards right-wing populism only confirms the role of language in contemporary society. If some populist discourses are no longer subject to truth or reality as regulative ideals, how else to account for them other than in terms of a language game that constructs rather than reflects its object? And if narcissist leaders celebrate themselves in social media, whipping up their followers with affect-laden speech, what keeps us from unpacking the rhetorical ploys that mesmerize their audiences so that we understand why emotion prevails over reason?
