Abstract
Professors may appear as specialised individualists in their fields, and yet they follow career patterns which are anything but unique. This book examines the career trajectories of the almost 2000 professors of linguistics and sociology in Germany, France and the UK. Grounded in social theory and drawing from a unique data set, it is a response to the question of how one becomes a professor. This book, based on a systematic empirical study, will be of interest to specialists in higher education studies as well as to linguists and sociologists, and to academics more generally.
