[Homophony avoidance in the production of voicing].
Abstract
The present study investigates voicing in /s/–/z/ and /t/–/d/ in minimal and non-minimal pairs in Hungarian in voicing neutralizing environments. We show that homophony avoidance, i.e., whether the obstruent is in a minimal or non-minimal pair, significantly influences the amount of voicing in these consonants. In neutralizing environments, voicing was always larger in minimal pairs. Utterance-finally, the difference in voicing was preserved, except in the case of fricatives, but only if /s/ and /z/ occurred in non minimal pairs. Across a word boundary before /p/, the proportion of voicing was always significantly higher in minimal pairs than in the non-minimal pairs. This means that forming part of a minimal pair overrides regressive voicing assimilation: the contrast between /t/–/d/ was preserved, while in the case of /s/–/z/ the difference observed in non-minimal pairs was enhanced. Across a word boundary before /b/, the minimal pair effect was prominent in stops: we did not find neutralization in words that formed a minimal pair, while the difference in voicing in non-minimal pairs was neutralized. In fricatives, the existing voicing contrast was further strengthened by the minimal pair effect.
