The issue of employment seems simple on the surface but conceals complexity and contestation. The massive transformations in global economy and society over the last decades include the huge change from rural to urban societies; disruptive changes from predominantly agrarian towards precarious service sector 'informal' employment; and moves from mechanical forms of industry towards the information age and the rise of the internet.
