Abstract
Aloidendron dichotomum has a noble and well-illustrated history. This species was first observed in habitat by Simon van der Stel in 1685 and painted by Hendrik Claudius in the same year. It was first described in 1776 by Francis Masson as Aloe dichotoma. William Paterson published the first scientific illustrations in 1789 and Thomas Baines published the first habitat painting of a whole plant in 1866. The species finally became Aloidendron dichotomum in 2013. Its distribution and habitat in southern Africa (Namibia and South Africa) are briefly reviewed, whilst its cultivation in the UK and South Africa is discussed.
