Abstract

A review of the latest study by Jimenez-Barron et al (2020) which contains many valuable insights into the evolutionary history of Agave and its close relatives, particularly in terms of major diversification events.
A significant finding is that Agave bracteosa is basal to the rest of the genus. The three current subgenera are not monophyletic and hence the present taxonomy is not supported.
