Abstract
This chapter explores 'single figure studies' or 'quasi-portraits' in the Rhoda Pritzker collection at the Yale Center for British Art. It argues that Pritzker's collection, though varied in many ways, contains a remarkable amount of 'single figure studies', by artists ranging from Walter Sickert and Gwen John to Kenneth Armitage and Keith Vaughan. The collection offers a fresh perspective on British artists' approach to the figure during the early to mid- twentieth century, drawing together artists whose oeuvres are usually considered separately.
