Abstract

Stapelia engleriana (Apocynaceae) is an unusual species from South Africa in a genus of 28 species. It branches mainly underground (hence the "iceberg" in the title) to form long procumbent above ground stems up to 30 cm long. Its flowers are small for the genus, about 2 cm in diameter, but these are on long pedicels that point the flowers downwards. This orientation of the flowers must attractive a particular pollinator, but this has yet to be identified.
