Abstract

We present a state- and game-based activity that introduces, in a large online distance-learning module, skills necessary for effective team working. Two versions of the activity were deployed: an email-based participatory activity, and a simulation of the activity which could be executed multiple times.

Team working is an important employability skill for computing graduates, required for BCS accreditation. But team working is notoriously challenging in distance learning environments, and students can be quite hostile to it. Gamification both lightens the theoretical burden of discussing team roles and behaviours, and demonstrates their importance for practical team-working exercises later in the module.

The game-based approach could be adapted for other computing scenarios, and may also be helpful for campus-based students.
