Abstract
This paper is part of a catalogue accompanying an exhibition entitled 'Echoes of Antiquities in the Ouevre of Domenikos Theotokopoulos' (Heraklion 9th September - 6th October 2019). The artist better known as El Greco was born, raised and trained as a Byzantine icon painter on Crete before he moved to Venice and subsequently to Spain. This bilingual paper (English and Greek) examines elements in El Greco's art that clearly reflect his extensive knowledge of the Byzantine monumental art of his island, which in turn reveal remnants from ancient Greek art.
