Abstract

The work described in this thesis consists of an investigation into the use of [Pddppe(MeOH)2] [CIO4]2, AgCIO4, (C6H5)3C+CIO4 and (CH3)3Si0CIO3 as catalyst precursors for the reaction of alcohols, particularly methanol, with triphenylsilane. Although the species (C6H5)3SiCIO4 could not be obtained in a pure form, evidence suggests it plays an important role in the reaction sequences of these precursors leading to the <i>in situ</i> formation of anhydrous perchloric acid. This acid then acts to catalyse the alcoholysis reaction.
