Abstract
Thermal anomalies detected in Britain by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) thermal alert system correspond mostly to industrial gas flares (at hydrocarbon installations and steelworks) and to fires in rural settings. Gas flares are also detected from several North Sea hydrocarbon production platforms. The effectiveness of the MODIS thermal alert system and its geolocational precision and accuracy is demonstrated.
