Abstract
'Kate' or 'Crabbit Old Woman' is a poem which is in a state of constant rediscovery and which is highly popular amongst carers and those working with frail older people. Supposedly the work of someone unable to speak, it asserts the individuality and hidden qualities of the author's life. The article considers the claims and implications of authorship and discusses the influence of the poem for care work.
