Abstract

The long, elaborate and ultimately futile attempt to negotiate a marriage between Elizabeth I and the Duke of Anjou is one of the most celebrated episodes in Elizabeth's reign. It is surprising, therefore, that very little scholarly work has appeared on the letters between the two principals, many of which are preserved at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This chapter provides for the first time fully annotated texts and translations of six of the most important letters from Elizabeth to Anjou, together with an overview of the correspondence and marriage negotiations as a whole. The political contexts of these letters have been freshly researched for this chapter and new, reliable dating of them has been provided.
