Abstract

Planning Transport Research and Computation's (PTRC) 1994 European Transport Forum was attended by over 700 delegates (more than half from overseas) who delivered some 200 papers, making it one of Europe's largest international annual transport research meetings. It is often too easy to concentrate on technological themes such as energy or emission efficiency, only to neglect transport's critical economic role and pervasive social and environmental impacts. Fortunately, on this occasion, energy took its place in a much wider canvas of issues, which better reflected how energy and environmental considerations are actually incorporated in transport decisions.
