Abstract
A key ambition in the formation of the European Higher Education Area and a European Research Area has been to make Europe a more competitive player in the global knowledge economy (Amaral et al. 2009). This plenary talk shows how such neoliberal policies (exemplified by university ranking lists) act as a type of 'covert language policy' (Piller and Cho 2013), driving, whether intentionally or not, the shift to English as a Medium of Instruction in European Higher Education.
