Abstract

This paper was delivered in an international conference that took place in Madrid, Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, to mark the 400th anniversary of El Greco's death. The paper addresses the Cretan identity of the artist that moves beyond geographical and ethnic origins and rather examines the extent of the influences El Greco's original training environment and cultural surroundings on Crete carried on his Spanish artistic production that earned him international recognition.
