Strange Territories: John Ireland and Arthur Machen

Richards, Fiona (2015). Strange Territories: John Ireland and Arthur Machen. Faunus: The Journal of the Friends of Arthur Machen, 32 pp. 29–41.

The article looks at the relationship between the music of the English composer John Ireland and his much admired contemporary, the Welsh writer Arthur Machen. Ireland first read Machen in 1906, his words, and the eerie places he evokes, becoming an integral part of the composer's personal musical world. The article focuses on shared sensibilities: autobiography, pagan places, the Victorian and Edwardian theatre and uncanny experiences in the landscape.
