Abstract
This presentation will describe the model for The Open University UK and compare and contrast it to other notable open universities around the world, exploring common points of reference for what it means to be truly ‘open’. Drawing on 45 years of institutional experience across an evolving UK landscape of higher education, we will look at how an open model is used to address key issues such as scale, access, quality and employability for massive numbers of students, and how this approach could inform innovative, nationally-owned solutions to meet the challenges for higher education in developing nations. The presentation will close with some key questions to stimulate discussion during and beyond the conference.
