Abstract

In this chapter we review and explore ideas connecting the emergence of smart electricity systems with the emergence of new criminal threats and innovations. We stress the systemic risks arising from willful criminal activity associated with future energy distribution systems. We draw upon prior work by Eric Luiijf and others concerning smart grid security. We also acknowledge the contribution of the seventh EC-Framework programme project “Sesame”. We close with some recommendations for further European Union research.
