Abstract

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an effective way of helping students to learn about the interactions of waste management processes and systems with the environment, but commercial software packages are not ideally suited to educational purposes and can be prohibitively expensive. A spreadsheet-based waste management LCA was developed for use by environmental management and engineering students. This allows the user to develop a waste collection and treatment scenario and assess its environmental impact in detail. A group of students who used the model reported that it was helpful in developing solutions and that it gave detailed results, but they would have welcomed more flexibility and supporting documentation.
