Abstract

This chapter discusses policy approaches to local and regional development which go beyond the new convenional wisdom of economic competitiveness. In this context, it particularly focuses on the experience of the 'new municipal socialism' of the 1980s and on more recent initiatives attempting to build non-capitalist practices within a capitalist economy.
